Squaring the Circle - New from the World Bank
The World Bank has published its most comprehensive report to date examining the need for a circular economy and highlighting lessons from the EU's pursuing the circular economy agenda, the GI Hub was pleased to provide advice and collaboration on the report. Its lessons can benefit countries within and beyond Europe’s borders.

What is being developed: Circular Economy Leadership Canada (CELC) was launched in 2018 at the G7 Oceans Summit in Halifax as a network of corporate leaders, non profit think tanks, and academic researchers. An initiative of The Natural Step Canada, CELC is working to connect Canada’s circular economy community and serves as a bridge to similar networks around the world. We provide thought leadership, technical expertise, and collaborative platforms for accelerating systems change and the transition to a low carbon, circular economy in Canada.

What is being developed: Victorian Government’s ecologiQ program supports the Recycled First Policy, which for the first time in Australian history, requires bidders on transport projects to optimise their use of reused and recycled materials. Since March 2020, all tenderers on Victorian major transport projects have had to demonstrate within their bid how they will optimise the use of recycled and reused materials at the levels allowed under current standards and specifications.

The goal is for the Dutch economy to be completely circular by 2050. By 2030 the consumption of primary raw materials should have been reduced by half.

From this analysis, the Hub distilled 15 broad actions – or transition pathways – that can be used by governments and industry to systematically plan infrastructure development and investment to achieve climate targets and the SDGs. The Hub will be releasing data and insights regarding the long term investments and transition pathways.

The initiative convened an Expert Panel of transport and finance experts from the eight MDB Partners. With the help of the Expert Panel, we were able to create a framework to prioritise the most relevant use cases and evaluate the 42 submissions to select a Top 5 InfraTech solutions relevant for road projects in emerging markets.
